How you can protect from skin cancer

There are three main types of cancers: basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer and melanoma. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), skin cancer, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The latest information available for 2008 indicates that more than 60,000 Americans has been diagnosed with melanomas of the skin cancer and more than 9,000 lost their lives to skin cancer.

It is a compelling story that we should look at how we can stop this and reverse the cycle. There are few steps you can take to prevent skin cancer:

  • Use a hat if you are outside
  • During most sunniest part of the day, between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, avoid continues exposure to sun
  • Use an appropriate sunscreen to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays
  • Avoid or decrease indoor tanning
  • Avoid use of tobacco products

Surgery, microscopically-controlled surgery, is available to remove the skin tissue and prevent recurrence of skin cancer. Most commons surgery includes cryosurgery, electrosurgery, topical therapy, and Mohs micrographic surgery. The Mohs’ micrographic surgery uses a technique to remove the cancer with the least amount of surrounding tissue and edges are checked immediately for any tumors.
