The Good and Bad of Using Marijuana

Article Submitted by Los Angeles Dispensaries

Some say it is safer than aspirin, while others claim it causes anxiety and depression. The use of medical marijuana is a controversial subject. However, in 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana. And while people continue to argue about the subject, studies have proven that there are both good and bad side effects associated with using marijuana.

The Good: Many patients rely on medical marijuana as a safe and effective medical treatment. Weed has been proven to ease the symptoms of serious illnesses such as cancer and AIDS. It helps with nausea, pain, and opens the appetite. Marijuana has also shown to help people suffering from other illnesses, including arthritis, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, glaucoma, migraines and symptoms of PMS.

The Bad: During intoxication, marijuana impairs short-term memory, attention, judgment, and other cognitive functions. After smoking marijuana, a person also experiences an increased heart rate and might experience psychotic episodes. However, there is little evidence to suggest that smoking marijuana has long-term or permanent consequences. It has been shown to increase risk of schizophrenia in vulnerable people, and may also increase the risk of anxiety and depression.
